Images and Visuals Guidelines
Great visuals tell powerful stories. These guidelines help our creators select and use imagery that respects our community, aligns with our values, and makes an impact for nonprofit causes.
01. Authenticity & Respect
Use images that represent real people and authentic situations. Avoid stereotypical portrayals or any imagery that might diminish the dignity of the subjects. When working with community members, always ensure you have their consent before capturing or using their likeness. Do not photograph or create identifiable images of children without the permission of a parent or legal guardian. Never exploit, stereotype, or sensationalize people or communities. When possible, focus on places, objects, nature, or artistic details instead of individuals.
02. Visual Quality & Clarity
High-resolution visuals enhance the professionalism of our collective work. Ensure photos are sharp, well-lit, and properly framed. Avoid over-filtering or excessive editing that distorts the original message or reality of the cause. Basic editing (cropping, lighting, and color correction) is encouraged. Do not alter images or visuals in ways that misrepresent reality. If AI was used to create or significantly enhance your visual, disclose it in your submission.
03. Purpose-Driven Selection
Every visual element should serve the narrative. Ask yourself: Does this image help explain the problem or celebrate the solution? Choose visuals that inspire hope or motivate action, moving away from purely aesthetic choices that lack substance.
Does this image or visual help others understand the place or cause?
Does it treat people and communities with respect?
Could it inspire someone to learn more, volunteer, or take action?
Every image and visual should tell a meaningful story while respecting the people, places, and communities it represents.
04. Intellectual Property
Only use visuals that you own, or are creative commons zero (CC0). Always credit photographers or artists when required. Using uncredited or copyrighted work without permission undermines our integrity as creators and as a nonprofit organization. All visuals should be original. Basic editing (cropping, lighting, and color correction) is encouraged. Do not alter images or visuals in ways that misrepresent reality.
If AI was used to create or significantly enhance your visual, disclose it in your submission.
05. Follow Basic Laws and Safety
Respect private property—obtain permission before entering or photographing private locations.
Follow all posted rules and local laws.
Do not trespass or enter unsafe or restricted areas.
Do not interfere with emergency responders, law enforcement, or active work sites.
Never put yourself or others at risk to create an image or visual.
